Train a Pug to Switch From Outside to Inside Housetraining

Question:  How do I get my 9 week old Pug puppy to go potty outside, instead of inside or on a wee wee pad? Owner: Melisa, Pug: Pearl.

Answer:  Hi Melisa.  Luckily, your Pug is only 9 weeks old.  At this age, your dog will be open more easily adaptable to the needed change in training.  Many owners of small breeds do choose to have their dog use a "wee pad", "Piddle Pad" or liter box for their bathroom needs.  This is usually helpful when living in an area where it will be difficult to bring the dog outside often.  However, since your Pug puppy is so young, you can definitely train her to change from inside to outside house training.

You will want to begin by removing the wee pads.  The success of this training will depend on your careful eye on her, to catch her each and every time that she must go to the bathroom.

Using the umbilical cord method is often recommended.  This simply means attaching a leash to your Pug and attaching the other end to you.  In this way, your Pug will be able to move around and play but will always be in your eye sight.

Each time she goes over to the area where her wee pad used to be, this will be your clue to immediately give the command word to go outside.  You may choose any command word. Most common would be a simple "Bathroom, outside" or something to this effect.

You will also, of course, want to bring her outside any time she appears to be making the motions of eliminating.

Besides this, you should take her outside every morning after waking up, every 2 hours and then once before bed.  At only a bit more than 2 months old, your Pug can only hold her needs for about 2 hours.  At 3 months old, she should be able to hold on for 3 hours and so on until she is an adult and can wait a maximum of 8 hours.

When you catch her as she is about to go inside, pick her up if you must so that she holds on until you get her to the outside area.  For the other scheduled times, simply put her on a leash and lead her outside.  One of the most important elements of training a Pug to go to the bathroom outside is the area that you choose for your dog to use.

A dog needs to be brought to the same area every time.  With no exception. It must be made very clear to your Pug where outside her is expected to go.  However, she must ultimately decide the exact spot.

A Pug should be brought to the area and the owner should stand exactly in the middle of this area.  The dog should then be allowed to roam anywhere that the leash will allow them to.  Do not give in to a dog who pulls and tries to begin roaming outside of the spot you have chosen.  Stand firm.  Your Pug must be taught that she does have the freedom to choose her exact spot, but that it will be within the location you have chosen.

Some dogs take quite a while to find just the right spot to urine or have a bowel movement.  An owner must have a lot of patience.  This is a big decision for some dogs!   Be patient while she walks around, sniffs around and sometimes sits to think about it!   A dog of this age should be given at least 10 to 15 minutes to decide.  If an owner only waits 5 minutes and decides that their dog must not have to go after all, this is when that dog will have an "accident" if brought back inside.

Remember that your words and actions will have a great impact on this training.  Every time that your Pug goes to the bathroom outside instead of inside, you should give very big words of praise.  Act as if she just did the most amazing feat in the world!  Give hugs, kisses and pats.  Play around with her and give her lots of attention.

If she has any accidents inside, your tone should not be an angry one.  It should show disappointment. Do not play with your dog for about 15 minutes after an inside incident.

Soon, your Pug will learn that she gets loving, happy and excited words and attention when she goes outside.  She will also learn that she does not get that attention if going inside.  In this way, your Pug puppy will want to please you and have no problem switching from inside to outside house training.
