Do Pug Dogs Feel Pain Like Humans? How do You Know a Pug is in Pain?
Question: How does one know when a dog is in pain? For example, according to the vet, Sophie has an abscessed tooth. Does it hurt? I mean, do dogs feel the same as us humans? Owner: Arlette, Pug dog: Sophie
Answer: Hi Arlette, we want to thank you for bringing up this question because it is very important for Pug owners to understand the answer.
A human feels because of sensors in the brain. Nerves, called nocieptive nerves, sense stimuli and transmit that down into the nervous system which causes one to feel physical discomfort or pain.
Dogs have this exact same process in their bodies. Dogs have both the nocieptive nerves and the same type of nervous system.
Therefore, medical science has proven that dogs do feel pain.
The difference between humans and dogs is how they show a reaction. It is important to understand and remember the way in which a dog will show that they are in pain. When your dog is ill, you must know the symptoms so that you can seek help. Since your dog cannot tell you what is wrong inside their body, it will be your ability to know from their behavior that something is wrong.
A dog may do one or all of the following:
• Cry or whine
• Lose their appetite
• Isolation – the dog may retreat to quiet areas, not want attention and not want to play
• The dog may pace back and forth or rock their body when sitting or laying
• The dog may become aggressive – dogs feel very vulnerable when in pain – instinct tells them that they are in a weaken state and are an easier “prey”. A dog’s instinct can then cause them to snap, bite, bark, growl, bare their teeth and even bite their human family members – even when a dog in normally very calm and happy
Your Pug dog is just like all of us, we all have different levels of pain tolerance. However, with an abscess tooth, most likely, Sophie is in some type of pain. If she is displaying any of the above signs, you should ask your vet for pain medication for her while her tooth is healing. We are assuming that she is on antibiotics? And that most likely that tooth will be pulled if the infection cannot be cleared up?
There are very safe pain medications that can be given to dogs. To all Pug owners: do not medicate your dog without vet supervision. Acetaminophen, for example, is toxic to dogs!
