Question: What kind of bones should I give my 7-year old black pug? The vet says she needs to chew more and should chew on raw bones....~ Arlette
Answer: Hi Arlette. For your Pug's veterinarian to suggest having your Pug dog eat raw bones most likely means that he has found that your dog is in need of extra calcium or at the very least this added nutrient will be very healthy for your Pug. The calcium that is found in raw bones is natural and it is also very digestible to a dog's sometimes sensitive digestive system.
The chewing will also help give your Pug a good tooth cleaning. However, do please keep in mind that daily dental care is needed in the form of you brushing your dog's teeth. In addition, a once-a-year professional cleaning is needed to remove tarter.
We are all used to giving our dogs "fake" bones, dog treats that are simply shaped as bones. We all also know to never give a dog chicken bones.
However, giving your Pug dog raw bones will be of benefit to your dog. Your Pug will enjoy chewing on the bones more if you can purchase some with a bit of meat still attached. The idea to this whole element is that your Pug will not just chew on the bones, but actually eat them.
You will want to give your Pug lamb flaps and/or beef or pork ribs. Some breeders and others will suggest chicken necks, but we do not recommend this at all; it is not worth the risk of a small bone getting into your Pug's throat.
Medium sized rib bones should be easy to purchase. You can even buy them to make for your dinner and simply save the bones for your Pug. Most dogs will be very happy to have such a treat!
